Track Rods

A track rod, also known as a tie rod, is a mechanical component in the steering system of a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) that connects the steering rack or box to the steering knuckle or spindle. The track rod transmits the steering movement from the steering wheel to the front wheels, allowing the driver to steer the vehicle. The track rod is typically a cylindrical or tapered metal rod that is inserted into the steering rack or box and the steering knuckle or spindle. The track rod has a hole through its center which allows it to be attached to the steering rack or box and steering knuckle or spindle with bolts. Track rods are critical for the steering of a HGV as they transmit the steering movement from the steering wheel to the front wheels, allowing the driver to steer the vehicle. They are subject to wear due to the forces and weight of the vehicle and the friction caused by the rotation. Over time, the track rods can become loose or worn, which can cause the steering to feel loose or the vehicle to wander. Therefore, track rods should be inspected and serviced regularly as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. In some cases, they may need to be replaced to ensure that the vehicle is safe to operate.
