Shock Absorbers

A shock absorber, also known as a damper, is a mechanical device that is installed on a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) to dampen the vibrations and movements of the suspension system. The shock absorber works by converting the kinetic energy of the suspension's up-and-down movements into heat energy, which helps to smooth out the ride and improve the handling of the vehicle. The basic design of a shock absorber consists of a piston that moves inside a cylinder, which is filled with oil or gas. As the vehicle's wheels encounter bumps and other road imperfections, the suspension compresses and expands. This movement pushes the piston up and down inside the cylinder, which forces the oil or gas to move through small openings or valves. The resistance of the fluid flowing through the valves creates the dampening effect that helps to reduce the vibrations and movements of the suspension. Shock absorbers are crucial for the handling and stability of a HGV. They help to keep the tires in contact with the road, which improves traction and reduces the risk of skidding or rolling over. They also play an important role in maintaining the comfort of the driver and passengers, by reducing the level of vibrations and impacts transmitted to the cabin. Shock absorbers should be inspected and serviced regularly, as recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, to ensure that they are working properly and that the vehicle's handling and stability is not compromised. Worn out or damaged shock absorbers can cause the vehicle to handle poorly, increase wear on the tires and suspension components, and make the ride more uncomfortable.
