Brake Shoes

Brake shoes are a key component of the braking system in a HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle). They are located inside the brake drum and are responsible for creating friction and stopping the vehicle's wheels. Brake shoes consist of a steel backing plate and a friction material, typically made of asbestos, semi-metallic or ceramic.

When the brakes are applied, the brake shoes are forced against the inside of the brake drum. The friction material on the brake shoes creates resistance against the brake drum, slowing down the wheel and bringing the vehicle to a stop.

Brake shoes are a wear item, meaning they will wear out over time and will need to be replaced. The rate of wear depends on the frequency and intensity of the brake usage, as well as the driving conditions. It is important to check the brake shoes regularly and replace them when they are worn. Neglecting to replace worn brake shoes can lead to decreased braking performance and increased risk of accidents.
